Introduction
When a drone crashes, investigators recover more than a weapon. They recover a record of the industrial ecosystem that made the weapon possible. Ukraine’s War & Sanctions “Components in Weapons” database has turned that principle into a public intelligence resource, cataloguing foreign-made electronics recovered from Russian and Iranian-designed systems and linking individual components to specific weapon types. Rather than treating wreckage as isolated evidence, the database aggregates thousands of findings into a searchable map of manufacturers, countries of origin, supply-chain dependencies and recurring procurement patterns. As of May 2026, it contained information on 5,816 foreign-produced components identified across 202 weapon systems.[War & Sanctions]war-sanctions.gur.gov.uaWar & SanctionsForeign components in weapons25 May 2026 — Foreign components in weapons. For analysts interested in reverse engineering foreign military technology, the significance is not only technical. The database shows how recovered drone parts can reveal procurement networks, sanctions vulnerabilities and shifts in sourcing behaviour over time. It effectively transforms battlefield debris into a governance and export-control tool.[War & Sanctions]war-sanctions.gur.gov.uaWar & SanctionsForeign components in weapons25 May 2026 — Foreign components in weapons. What the Database Records From Recovered Weapons
The database originated as a Ukrainian effort to document foreign components found in weapons used against Ukraine. Initially launched with information on more than 2,000 components recovered from Russian and Iranian systems, it has expanded steadily as investigators examine additional drones, missiles, electronic warfare equipment and other military hardware.[NABU]nazk.gov.uaNABUThe NACP launches the world's first open database with…7 Dec 2023 — The database currently contains information on foreign compone…
Its distinctive feature is granularity. Instead of merely stating that a drone contains foreign technology, investigators catalogue specific integrated circuits, processors, radio-frequency components, navigation modules, transistors and microcontrollers. These components are then linked to the weapon in which they were discovered and, where possible, to their manufacturer and country of origin.[NABU]nazk.gov.uaNABUThe NACP launches the world's first open database with…7 Dec 2023 — The database currently contains information on foreign compone…
For drone analysis, this creates a cumulative picture that individual crash reports cannot provide. A recovered Shahed-derived attack drone may reveal a navigation chip from one supplier, a radio component from another and a processor from a third. When dozens or hundreds of recovered systems are entered into the same database, patterns emerge:
- Which manufacturers appear most frequently.
- Which component categories are most difficult for Russia to replace.
- Which foreign technologies recur across multiple drone families.
- Whether newer weapons contain the same parts as earlier examples.
The result is less a catalogue of wreckage than a map of technological dependence.[Follow the Money]ftm.eurussia war ukraine european tech hidden supply chainThis database contains a total of over 5,500…Read more…
How Component Patterns Support Sanctions and Export Controls
The database was designed not only for technical exploitation but also for policy action. Modern sanctions regimes attempt to deny access to critical technologies, yet enforcement agencies often struggle to identify which specific products remain reaching sanctioned military programmes. Recovered components provide that missing evidence.[NABU]nazk.gov.uaNABUThe NACP launches the world's first open database with…7 Dec 2023 — The database currently contains information on foreign compone…
By aggregating thousands of component identifications, investigators can show that particular classes of microelectronics continue appearing in newly manufactured drones and missiles despite export restrictions. This allows governments to move beyond general assumptions about sanctions evasion and focus on concrete products, distributors and transit routes.[The Kyiv Independent]kyivindependent.comukraine launches database of foreign components found in russian weapons8, lists 2,453 components of foreign provenience, such as microcircuits or transistors, that were…Read more…
The database has repeatedly highlighted the continued presence of Western-origin technology inside Russian weapons. Earlier releases showed that a large majority of identified foreign components originated from American manufacturers, while additional components came from companies based in Europe and Asia.[The Kyiv Independent]kyivindependent.comukraine launches database of foreign components found in russian weapons8, lists 2,453 components of foreign provenience, such as microcircuits or transistors, that were…Read more…
This evidence serves several governance functions:
- Export-control refinement: Authorities can tighten controls on specific components rather than broad categories.
- Enforcement prioritisation: Investigators can focus on the parts most commonly appearing in recovered weapons.
- Corporate engagement: Manufacturers gain visibility into how ostensibly civilian products are reaching military end users.
- Secondary-sanctions targeting: Governments can identify intermediary firms and procurement networks facilitating transfers.[U.S. Department of the Treasury]home.treasury.govDepartment of the TreasuryU.S. Continues to Degrade Russia's Military-Industrial…May 1, 2024 — The almost 300 targets being sanctioned…
The database therefore acts as a bridge between battlefield forensics and regulatory action. A chip recovered from drone debris becomes evidence not only of engineering choices but also of supply-chain leakage.
Why Later Wreckage Can Reveal Substitutions
One of the most valuable aspects of a longitudinal component database is its ability to track change. Military procurement networks rarely remain static under sustained sanctions pressure. As certain components become harder to acquire, designers seek alternatives.
Drone wreckage recovered months or years apart can therefore reveal substitution behaviour. A processor that appeared routinely in early-production systems may disappear from later examples. A different manufacturer may emerge in its place. New navigation modules, communications chips or power-management components may appear as procurement channels evolve.[Follow the Money]ftm.eurussia war ukraine european tech hidden supply chainThis database contains a total of over 5,500…Read more…
This makes each newly recovered drone a data point in a larger timeline. Analysts are not simply asking what components are present. They are asking whether those components are the same as those found previously.
The War & Sanctions database enables that comparison because historical entries remain available alongside newer discoveries. Ukrainian intelligence updates have repeatedly added newly identified components from missiles and drones, allowing observers to compare older and newer weapon generations. By late 2025, the database had grown to include nearly 5,200 components across 179 weapon samples; by May 2026 it exceeded 5,800 components across 202 systems.[odessa-journal.com]odessa-journal.comdefence intelligence publishes new data on russian missile and uav componentsOdessa JournalNew Report Reveals Foreign Components in Russian…Oct 27, 2025 — Ukraine reveals 68 new components in Russian missiles an…
For sanctions analysts, substitutions can be as informative as original discoveries. A replacement component may indicate:
- Successful sanctions pressure on a previous supplier.
- New procurement routes through third countries.
- Increased reliance on Chinese or other alternative sources.
- Design compromises imposed by restricted access to preferred technologies.
In this sense, later wreckage often provides more policy-relevant information than earlier wreckage because it reveals how a military-industrial system is adapting.
From Technical Artefact to Supply-Chain Intelligence
Traditional reverse engineering focuses on understanding how a weapon works. The War & Sanctions database extends that logic by asking how the weapon came to exist in the first place. Every recovered drone component represents a connection between a military system and a commercial supply chain.
The database’s value lies in aggregating those connections. A single circuit board recovered from a drone crash may reveal little beyond a manufacturer’s logo. Thousands of components collected from hundreds of weapons reveal recurring dependencies, procurement patterns and adaptation strategies.[War & Sanctions]war-sanctions.gur.gov.uaWar & SanctionsForeign components in weapons25 May 2026 — Foreign components in weapons. That transformation—from debris field to searchable supply-chain map—is what makes the project distinctive. It converts the forensic exploitation of drones into a continuously expanding dataset that can support sanctions enforcement, export-control policy and broader efforts to understand how foreign military technologies are sustained under economic pressure.[nazk.gov.ua]nazk.gov.uaNABUThe NACP launches the world's first open database with…7 Dec 2023 — The database currently contains information on foreign compone…
