Introduction
The MiG-25 “Foxbat” became one of the Cold War’s most famous examples of threat inflation because it appeared to be something it was not. Before Western engineers could inspect one, the aircraft seemed to combine extreme speed, extreme altitude performance and deep secrecy in a single package. To outside observers looking through satellite photographs, radar tracks and occasional air-show appearances, it resembled a revolutionary air-superiority fighter that might outperform anything in NATO service. In reality, the Foxbat was a specialised interceptor optimised for a narrow mission: destroying high-speed bombers and reconnaissance aircraft.
